Negativity, doubt, fear, and procrastination; Neither of these four words carries a positive connotation; however, unfortunately, we have all experienced these emotions at one point or another in Direct Sales.

Now, there is nothing wrong with sensing a bit of fear, having a moment of doubt or negativity or choosing to procrastinate for a few minutes, but what we absolutely have to avoid is letting these four factors impede our progress. In other words, we cannot be bogged down by negativity and doubt, or let fear and procrastination overtake and dictate the course of our business.

As party planners and direct sellers we have the task to motivate and intrigue others to participate in our business, but how can we do that if we—the business holders—are not feeling motivated? As the founder of Party Plan 123, I feel this subject is very important to address, which is why I am going to delve a bit deeper into these four segments and elaborate on how to fight discouragement in the party planning business.

Learn more about this in our video & article below:

Here’s how to deal with 4 Killers of Success in Direct Sales and go from Bad to Great as a party plan consultant:

1) Negativity

When you think about negativity as a direct seller, there’s the kind of negativity that can arise from you and the personal thoughts that are running through your mind, and the other type of negativity which stems from the people around you (like family members, friends, colleagues, etc.) Other people’s thoughts and words can affect us deeply, and if those words have a negative connotation, they can leave us feeling quite bad and discouraged. More often than not, this is the type of negativity that can get you down the most, and if you’re not careful and omit to address this negativity in your direct sales life, it can very quickly kill your party plan business because it kills your confidence and positive outlook on your career.

So, what does one do when facing negativity?  If you find yourself discouraged due to your own personal negative thoughts or discouragement brought on by others, seek out a positive person—in this case your supervisor, mentor or a boss who knows a lot about the business. Instead of whining and complaining, go to someone who can offer you good advice and who will be able to uplift you and provide words of inspiration.

2) Doubt—

What do we do when doubt creeps in? Like negativity, doubt can stem from ourselves, our family or friends; however, it should not determine the course we take. Choosing success is of paramount importance. Acknowledging doubt is necessary, but make sure you also get over it, move on and follow your dream. Hold on to your vision, and keep on dreaming till you reach your destination. Many of you have probably heard the saying before, ‘If you can dream it, you can do it.’ So, my advice to you, keep on dreaming and as Nike would say, Just Do It! So, now, the question for you is what is your dream? What’s your vision that would motivate you to keep going through the tough times?

3) Fear—

A lot of times fear is exacerbated in our own mind, and it turns out it is not even as bad as we make it out to be. Personally, I’ve learned to see fear in a different way. I’ve learned that fear is a sign of you doing something that you are excited and passionate about. It is also an indicator that it’s probably something new and important to you. In other words, fear does no longer need to be viewed as something to be negative about, to be afraid of; fear is simply a validation that you are on the right track. You are doing something that is special to you, and you need to keep going. So, don’t be discouraged. Take action. Do it because you are on the right track.

4) Procrastination—

Procrastination or the action of delaying or postponing something can lead to nothing good, fruitful or positive; and after all, why would you procrastinate? Often, the reason for procrastination is intimidation, lack of motivation or just fear of failing. However, bear in mind that if you’re doing something challenging and time-consuming, it is more likely to produce great results. If you find yourself procrastinating, recall some inspiring success stories, talk to people who’ll encourage you and even help you on your journey. Stop putting something off simply because it might be a bit hard to accomplish…The grandeur of your project is just another sign that you should try harder in spite of it.

I’d like to end with a few questions today, which will hopefully help you stay the course, and remind you during the rough times what you are here for.

  1. What is your vision?
  2. What is your dream?
  3. What is that one thing that you’re hoping for and won’t let go of?
  4. Where does your motivation lie?
